my favorite symbolic act of sketch/ art journaling is to turn any “bad”, negative feelings into pictures. Especially if you can’t draw! Make them ugly, funny, messy. Demystify them and take away their power.
Art journaling is a way of keeping a journal that involves, well, art! You can either use doodles, colors and collage elements between words or sketch the highlights (or low- for that matter) of your day. And you don’t even have to know how to draw.
I had taken a Skillshare class a couple of years ago, Drawing as self-discovery by Mari Andrew (this is her Instagram!) and I saw drawing and sketching through a different pair of eyes. You could use them to express feelings, to describe your mental state, and -God- you could not care for any of it to be “good”.
You don’t have to be an artist to have a creative practice. Everyone can benefit from some creativity in our everyday lives. Many people say they’re not crafty, they can’t draw, they can’t do anything with their hands. None of which are required for art journaling.
If you do care to grow artistically, though, art journaling is an excellent way to stay connected with your art even if it is only in your daily journal. I always “note” what I’ve learned from each sketch and I can choose whether I’ll put more or less effort into one, depending on the mood and the energy I have. It’s a practice, but without the pressure.
The book ‘Draw your day’ by Samantha Dion Baker is a beautiful resource for both cases.
Art journaling for a mental vacation can be used to document your life or ‘manifest’ it. You can use it to sketch what has happened or as a mental vacation, to sketch what you’d like to happen.
I guess I’m mostly referred to sketch journaling when I say that it can be powerful to give form to your ideal day through a journaling spread. Think about it: you create something, with your own hands, out of nothing. Where there was a blank page, you can now see your kind of perfectly spent day. Or your books-to-read, or your perfect wardrobe. I’m not necessarily talking about the law of attraction here (even though, why not?), but if only as a mental vacation, to feed our minds with something positive, nice and optimistic. Just for fun!
On that note, my favorite symbolic act of sketch/ art journaling is to turn any “bad”, negative feelings into pictures. Especially if you can’t draw! Make them ugly, funny, messy. Demystify them and take away their power.
Until next time, take care
